Heath’s Young Warriors Show Steel In Yorkshire Bowl Clash

Reporter: Al Gordon
Dated: 22 March 2026

Heath U15s 5 – 21 Middlesbrough

Heath U15s walked out for their first ever Yorkshire final with the clubhouse packed, the sun out, and a wall of noise behind them. A huge moment for the lads, the coaches, and the club — and the stage was set for a cracking game of rugby.

Heath came out firing. The opening exchanges were played almost entirely in Middlesbrough territory as the boys looked to land the first blow. But the visitors defended stubbornly, and when their fly-half finally got a chance to clear his lines, he did it well. Middlesbrough built pressure from the resulting field position and struck first.

If Middlesbrough expected Heath to fold, they were mistaken. Led superbly by captain Jasper Haigh, the forwards were relentless at the breakdown. The front-row trio of Harry Lowe, James Travis and Lewis Farrell refused to take a backward step against a much bigger pack.

Alfie Cartwright entered the fray early, bringing his trademark noise and physicality in midfield. Heath carved out chances, but a mix of small errors, outstanding Middlesbrough defence, and a few tough calls meant the try line stayed just out of reach.

The standout feature of the half was Heath’s defensive steel. The back three of Ethan Gill, Oscar Szadbey and the electric Ethan Murphy were immense. Murphy in particular produced a defensive masterclass — reading breaks, chopping down runners twice his size, and turning potential tries into nothing. Sublime work.

Heath needed more of the same grit and a little more accuracy with ball in hand. But Middlesbrough came out of the blocks with real intent. Their forwards and backs linked beautifully, stretching Heath and eventually breaking through again.

The visitors were now in full flow. Another wave of pressure, another score, and suddenly Heath were staring at a three‑try deficit.

With 20 minutes left, Middlesbrough looked ready to run away with it. But Heath refused to let the final become a procession. The lads dug in, rucked like demons, counter‑rucked with real venom, and clawed back momentum.

Bodies were being put on the line everywhere. Murphy produced a sensational try‑saving tackle to stop a Middlesbrough forward who looked certain to score. Will Carter then had to leave the field after a head knock, prompting Ethan Gill to slot in at scrum‑half.

In the dying minutes, Heath threw everything at the Middlesbrough line. Harry Lowe powered blind from 10 metres out and grounded the ball, but the referee — unsighted — ruled no try. Frustration, yes, but it only fuelled the fire.

Seconds later, after a Middlesbrough clearance, Murphy gathered the ball 35 metres out on the right. He spotted space on the opposite flank and went for it. After 60 minutes of defensive heroics, where he found the legs is anyone’s guess — but he burned the entire Middlesbrough back line to score in the left corner. A sensational finish.

FT: Heath 5 – 21 Middlesbrough

A huge congratulations to Middlesbrough — a powerful, well‑drilled side who played superbly. Their physicality was immense, and man for man they had size on us across the park. But reaching our first Yorkshire final is a massive achievement for this group and for the club. The lads should be incredibly proud of their performance, their heart, and the way they represented Heath.

Man of the Match: Ethan Murphy
His finest performance of the season — ferocious in defence, fearless in contact, and capped with a brilliant solo try. Outstanding.

A massive thank you to all parents and supporters for creating such a special atmosphere — the touchline and the clubhouse were buzzing.

What a season it’s been. Keep an eye out for details of the end‑of‑season awards. Enjoy your summer sports, lads — you’ve earned it.
