On a crisp, bright morning at Old Otliensians, Otley hosted a depleted but determined Heath side in a 14‑a‑side clash that delivered grit, drama, and a tale of two very different halves.
Heath arrived missing four players, but there was no shortage of character. Will Carter slotted in at fullback, Ben Ingham took on second‑row duties, and Kia Knowles anchored the back row. Meanwhile, Alfie Cartwright turned up sporting a fresh pair of emergency‑purchase boots—straight from Sports Direct and straight into the action.
First Half: Otley in Control
The opening exchanges were cagey, with neither side finding early rhythm. Otley gradually tightened their grip on possession, rucking sharply and forcing turnovers. Their reward came on 12 minutes when their fullback sliced through from 40 metres to open the scoring.
Otley 7–0 Heath (12 mins, conv.)
Heath’s set piece was functioning well—scrum steady, lineout sharp—but slow ball hampered the backline, allowing Otley’s defence to fly up and shut down space.
Despite some heroic tackling from Oscar Szadbey, Cartwright, and the ever‑alert Carter, Otley struck again on 21 minutes after a break down the left.
Otley 14–0 Heath (21 mins, conv.)
Heath dug in defensively to reach halftime without further damage, but Otley had dominated territory and tempo.
HT: Otley 14–0 Heath
Second Half: Heath Ignite
The halftime message was simple: more aggression at the breakdown and quicker ball to unleash the backs.
It worked.
On 34 minutes, Heath finally found their spark. Faster service allowed Cartwright to square up his opposite man, accelerate into space, and scorch past two cover defenders to score under the posts.
Otley 14–5 Heath (34 mins, unconv.)
Heath were suddenly rampant—pressuring Otley, winning collisions, and playing with real intent. But just as momentum swung, Otley’s fullback produced a moment of brilliance: a towering up‑and‑under, a full‑tilt chase, a clean gather, and a 60‑metre sprint to the line.
Otley 19–5 Heath (37 mins, unconv.)
Heath refused to fold. Lewis Farrell was immense, punching holes with powerful lines. Jasper Haigh and the pack cleared rucks with venom, giving scrum‑half Lennon Wood the quick ball he’d been craving. Otley began conceding penalties as the pressure mounted.
From a well‑worked lineout—Travis to Crowther, lifted superbly by Farrell and Harry Lowe—Sonny Gordon fired a perfectly timed pass to Louie Moss, who bulldozed and burned his way through the defence. Game well and truly on.
Otley 19–12 Heath (41 mins, conv. Gordon)
But Otley hit back instantly, a clever kick‑through unlocking the Heath defence for a converted try.
Otley 26–12 Heath (44 mins, conv.)
Heath kept hammering away, and a third try looked on the cards until Kai Knowles was bundled into touch in the corner. That proved the final twist.
FT: Otley 26–12 Heath
Final Thoughts
Heath’s second‑half performance was outstanding—full of pace, aggression, and ambition. Had they played with that intensity from the start, the scoreline could have been very different. Still, both clubs can be proud of the spirit, respect, and rugby values on display.
Standouts
• Will Carter – Rock‑solid at fullback, reading the game superbly and making crucial tackles.
• Lewis Farrell – A force in the forwards, dominant in the set piece and devastating on the carry.
• Man of the Match: Louie Moss – Growing into the inside‑centre role with every game. His partnership with Cartwright is blossoming, and his second‑half display—both in defence and attack—was exceptional.
Next week, Heath hit the road to face West Park Leeds. Plenty of positives to build on.
