Last-Minute Heartbreak for Heath in Yorkshire Cup Clash

Reporter: Al Gordon
Dated: 14 December 2025

Yorkshire Cup (Division 2) – Round 3

Scarborough U15s 24 – 22 Heath U15s

Heath’s U15s made the long trip to Scarborough for their first ever meeting with the seaside team in Round 3 of the Yorkshire Cup. With injuries and illness limiting numbers, Heath travelled with just 15 players and no substitutes, though they were boosted by the return of Alfie Cartwright from injury. Conditions were dry but a strong wind made lineouts a lottery.

First Half

Heath struck early. After Scarborough handling errors gifted a scrum 20 metres out, No.8 Humphrey Hall broke blind down the right, dragging defenders before offloading to Cartwright who finished smartly.
Scarborough 0 – 5 Heath (3 mins, unconverted)

Scarborough responded by dominating possession, their forwards combining well and their own No.8 making powerful runs. Heath were forced into long spells of defence. On 16 minutes Scarborough crossed in the corner despite Lewis Farrell’s heroic effort to hold the runner up.
Scarborough 5 – 5 Heath (16 mins, unconverted)

The hosts continued to press and, on the final play of the half, added another unconverted try.
Half‑time: Scarborough 10 – 5 Heath

Second Half

Heath knew they needed territory and ball in hand. Early in the half, strong carries from Harry Lowe and Thomas Crowther set the platform. From a ruck 30 metres out, Charlie Anderson spotted space on the blindside and showed great pace to score wide.
Scarborough 10 – 10 Heath (32 mins, unconverted)

Momentum shifted. Heath’s forwards drove into the Scarborough red zone, and Lowe powered over to edge his side ahead.
Scarborough 10 – 15 Heath (45 mins, unconverted)

Scarborough hit back with six minutes left, breaking from deep to score a converted try.
Scarborough 17 – 15 Heath (54 mins, converted)

But Heath weren’t finished. From his own 20m line, Hall produced a moment of brilliance—stepping past centre and wing before outpacing the full back to score under the posts. Sonny Gordon added the extras.
Scarborough 17 – 22 Heath (58 mins, converted)

Final Drama

With the clock almost gone, Heath needed only to secure the restart. A knock‑on handed Scarborough a scrum, and the home side seized their chance. Sustained pressure on the line eventually told, and Scarborough scored under the posts with the final play. The conversion sealed a heartbreaking finish.
Full‑time: Scarborough 24 – 22 Heath

Reflections

It was a contest that could have gone either way, with Heath showing immense defensive resilience and spirit despite their limited numbers. Special credit goes to Kai Knowles for stepping into an unfamiliar role, and to the award winners:

•  Man of the Match: Humphrey Hall
•  Most Improved: Thomas Crowther
