Cleckheath welcomed Leodensians in the Yorkshire Cup to North Dean
Zak Thomson And Nick Massarella instructed the players to play simple, with the weather conditions not being the best
First Half
Cleckheath kicked off and the opposition was straight on the attack and with 3 strong runs the opposition was in our 22. But a handling error came and it was a scrum to Cleckheath.
The game was end to end stuff with some quality rugby from both sides, but mistakes still came. Cleckheath then saw some very Strong runs from Nicholas Trickett, Jake Jackson and Sriven Pasika.
From a scrum, Cleckheath looked dangerous as Francis Regan got the ball and ran around the defenders, kicked through and made the opposition kick the ball out 10m from the try line. After a couple of phases, Cleckheath lost the ball, following which Leodensians went up the field and scored, just before half time. Conversion missed, 5-0,.
Cleckheath kicked off and put together some good phases but handling errors were still present and the ref blew for half time.
Still 5-0 at the break.
Zak and Nick regrouped with the lads. Told them that they were still in this game and made the changes required - with all players getting onto the field
Second Half
The lads took on board what Zak and Nick had said and the difference it made was unbelievable. They stuck to the structure that had been set out at the start of the match. Unfortunately, Leos took possession and scored. Conversion missed 10-0.
Cleckheath kicked off and, like at the start of the half, controlled the ball and possession. Leodensians showed what they have to offer by passing out wide with the wings showing well. Great tackling from Nickolas Trickett stopped them in their tracks.
Cleckheath showed that they have pace as well - as Francis Regan, from a scrum, ran from his own 22m line to score under the posts, which he then converted; 10-7.
Cleckheath remained the dominant side in the last 5 mins, putting the pressure on the opposition in the own 22, but despite this Cleckheath just couldn’t get over the line and then one last handling error came along, leading to a scrum to Leodensians. There was one final strong scrum from Cleckheath, but Leodensians kept the possession and the referee blew up for full time; 10-7
The lads worked extremely well; very, very unlucky to not come away with the win but after regrouping they know what needs to be done to make it right next week against Huddersfield
