Plenty of positives against a strong side

Reporter: Alistair Gordon
Dated: 10 December 2023

Heath u13s travelled to Baildon who had merged with Bradford & Bingley u13s.

Heath had a 14 strong squad including Alex Murphy, Bradley Gill and Charlie White all playing up from u12s and Alex Kershaw getting his Heath debut after impressing in recent training.

At kick off Sonny Gordon spotted the Baildon team standing too deep and chipped his kick-off 10m to regather and get Heath immediately on the front foot.  This pressure took the large Baildon team by surprise and after a quick tap and go by scrum half Lennon Wood, Ethan Murphy sprinted down the left to score.  Baildon 0 - 5 Heath.

This triggered a strong response from Baildon who were competing well at the breakdown and rushing in defence.  Baildon scored three back to back tries with strong runs from their outside centre.  Halftime: Baildon 15 - 5 Heath.

Heath were struggling with a couple of injuries which meant that Baildon offered a player up who did his club proud.  Baildon applied pressure down the right wing and scored.  20 - 5.

The Heath defence was under immense pressure now and was holding strong in the middle.  Alex Kershaw was putting hit after hit, and with a turnover prop Lewis Farrell went on a barnstorming 30 yard run - more of this please Lewis…awesome!

Baildon returned back to the Heath half and were successful in crossing the line again.  25 - 5.  Heath could have given in at this stage as the legs were getting heavy now against the bigger and fresher squad.  But the lads wanted more.

Heath chose to kickoff and with a great chase got turn over ball then a penalty.  Another quick tap to Ethan Murphy and he charge over the line to bag his brace of tries.  25 - 10.

Baildon finished the game with another try.  Final score 30 - 10.

With a number of regulars missing from the team and the recent upheaval in the Heath junior section this was a performance the lads should be proud of…the coaches were certainly proud of them!
