Solid AWAY win lines up the first League Game next week.

Reporter: Richard Cole
Dated: 15 September 2017

Heath started their new campaign with a friendly fixture at Pontefract, a team which plays one league below the newly promoted seconds.

We arrived to surprisingly bright sunshine with the pitch looking in good condition. Ponte's Vets game had been cancelled, so they played with a squad of 36, while Heath, boosted by the rained off Whitworth, had a strong line-up including several first team members and returning players.

Debutant Ali was soon in the action, entertaining the ever vocal crowd and the pack set a solid platform which should have seen more points.

The first quarter was fairly even, with Heath having the better of territory and possession. Eventually this paid off, when Mark Puttick latched onto the back of a mall and forced his way over for an unconverted try.

Heath kept the pressure on and should have scored through the backs twice and via the 'held up' Dancey. However, the movement in the backs was breaking down far too regularly and it was on one of these occasions when a dropped ball was fly hacked through by the Ponte wingman. At this point it didn't seem dangerous until the covering Cole fumbled the ball and gifted the wingman with a try under the posts, surprisingly unconverted.

At halftime, apart from the mistakes, Heath needed to continue to assert pressure and were confident of winning. The returning Sam Gill set the platform in the backs with some big hits and straight running, complimented by the classy Sam Pollard. Heath's defence held firm and their dominance up front was rewarded when debutant Adam Milner touched down from a pushover try.

A good first hit-out with positive signs going into the first league game against Yarnbury.
