Reynolds 16 Sharp 12 Owen 10 Gleeson 15 Darling Subs Day Heath travelled to Huddersfield YMCA, in a hastily arranged friendly after Keighley were unable to field a side, in a rearranged league tie. Huddersfield fielded a combined side of 3rd and 4th team players and with a squad of over 20 players, Heaths fitness was going to be put to a stern test, only having one replacement themselves. Huddersfield kicked off against the slight slope, and were aiming to make the use of their physically larger team. Heath went straight onto the attack, starting much quicker than last week. Neilly drove forward into YM’s 22, the ball eventually went to touch, and the ball was cleared to half way from the lineout. Heath secured the ball and again drove forward, YM conceded one of many penalties during the afternoon, for hands in the ruck and the lineout was taken on the 5m line. Heath knocked on and from the scrum, Berridge ran the ball back. Another penalty came from not rolling away, but Heath lost the lineout when again attacking. With all of their pressure it was hoped that Heath would eventually be able to record a score. Next it was Darling’s chance to show a clean pair of heels to chasing opponents, but was wrapped up in tackle and penalised for not releasing. YM spread wide from their lineout, but the ball was spoilt by Heath pack and Berridge was released on the wing, a neat kick through, had him outpace his cover and he dived over for a well worked try. Gleeson missed the difficult conversion 0v5 From the lineout the ball was returned by Heath and then chipped through by the YMCA centre, only to be caught by Dawes, who avoided a tackle, and was able to release Gleeson, allowing him once again to sprint through for a Try under the posts, which he duly converted. 0 v 12 Pace was proving to be the decisive weapon in this battle, although the pack were giving as good as they got in contact areas. James returned the kick-off this time and forced an offside penalty, Dawes took ball off the top of the lineout, Reynolds ran back into contact and popped it to Kerr, who broke several tackles only to be stopped on 5 m line, and then conceded a penalty for holding on. Again the ball was cleared, but Heath spoilt the lineout, James secured the ball, left the pack trailing but was then adjudged to have passed forward to Wilkinson who was in the clear. Huddersfield attacked from the scrum and forced a penalty which then gave them an attacking lineout on our 22, one of their few in the first period. They secured the ball but a great tackle from Hinchcliffe, forced them to concede a penalty. Again we took the lineout, this was won and the ball spread wide to Gleeson, who was only stopped on his mazy run by a cynical trip, which only brought a penalty. The tap penalty was stopped and resulted in a penalty against Heath. The ball was kicked clear, but failed to make touch , Wilkinson ran the ball back into the 22 and forced two consecutive penalties , from the last one, Wilkinson took a quick tap and dived through before YM could react , again Gleeson took the extra points 0v19. Neilly returned the kick, but YM turned over and tried to bring their backs into the game, great tackles by Owen and Barnes , forced another penalty, Gleeson kicked though for Berridge to chase but the ball went dead, and a scrum back was awarded. Whitworth was having a great game at Prop, and the scrum was spoilt by Heath, Barnes stopped the drive, and Dawes trying to collect forced YM to hold on and concede another penalty. From the lineout, Heath tried a set move with Dawes, tapping down to the overlapping Barnes, but the ball was knocked on by an unlucky Reynolds and the ball cleared for Half Time Heath lead 19v 0 Barnes, carrying an arm injury, was replaced by Day who moved into the 2nd row, with James moving to Prop. The kickoff failed to carry 10m but Heath once again showed strong scrummaging, and Wilkinson was able to steal the ball but was grounded close to the line. Huddersfield cleared the ball only for the official to blow for an injury stoppage. YM secured the ball but great pressure from Collinge and Owen forced a kick straight to touch. Heath again won great lineout ball, and the ball made its way to Hinchcliffe who stormed through to score and chalk himself off of the naked run list for the annual dinner. The conversion was missed 0 v 24 Huddersfield then rallied to drive through themselves, Berridge and Owen combined to drive them into touch. From the lineout it was Sharpe’s time to go on a great run, Huddersfield committed an in at the side infringement and then another from the lineout for not rolling away. Dawes again took the ball, and Gleeson kicked the ball through, the pack arrived to support the ruck, and the ball squirted back to the YM line, allowing the chasing Dawes to collect and also score his first try of the Season, coach Baxter was now left with no candidates for the “end of season, run of shame”. Gleeson took the extras to move the score to 0v31. Huddersfield YM were now starting to tire and they made a host of changes to relieve their valiant efforts. They were again on the back foot, when Wilkinson collected the ball on the 22 and seeing a gap sprinted the length of the pitch to score his 2nd of the match, shielded all the way by Gleeson. The conversion was missed and Wilkinson left the field to be replaced by Barnes again. 0 v 36 Dawes once again secured quality lineout ball, which was passed quickly through the backs ending with Hinchcliffe releasing the overlapping Darling for another great score, the extras were easily taken 0 v 43. Heath were now tasking themselves with keeping a clean sheet , but the fresh legs of Huddersfield eventually gave them a well deserved consolation try. Keeping the ball in their forwards, they made several drives via rolling mauls. Heath defended as best they could but eventually the relentless attack allowed Huddersfield to cross and also convert, shortly after the referee blew for time to finish 7 v 43 The pack worked well in this match against a much larger outfit, great rucking and discipline kept the penalty count down and the agile Day gave added mobility to the usual formation. Whitworth was strong at prop and Kerr, James and Neilly added experience to this combined effort, Barnes again secured the ball on our put in and allowed the ball to be released before we were pushed off. Reynolds and Sharp swapped scrum half roles giving cover there now and Gleeson and Collinge gave quality ball for Owen, Hinchcliffe and Berridge to feed off. Darling secured everything kicked back and also joined in the scoring from one of the moves of the match
