HEATH'S inability to win away in Yorkshire One this season is, according to their coach Kevin Plant, "one of life's great mysteries." That's because they continue to impress at West Vale, where they made it six wins out of six with an ultimately comprehensive victory over the bottom club on Saturday. It looked plain sailing when they surged into a 12-0 lead after 18 minutes but their attack stalled in mid-match and although the visitors had very little to offer with ball in hand, they narrowed the gap to three points just after the interval with fullback Tom Collard's third long-range penalty. An opportunist try from flanker Ollie Wilby got Heath up and running again and the home side added another 24 points in the last 17 minutes for a runaway success. While there was little between the sides up front, Heath clearly held all the aces in the backs. Giles Hetherington may not have impressed his coach with his distribution but the stand off clearly has enough tricks to unlock any defence at this level, while Marty Moana, in the twilight of his rugby career, provided plenty of punch in the centre and will be a potent weapon once he fully adapts, following his switch from the 13-a-side code. Heath also look to have uncovered another useful scrum half in Matt Hallett while winger Matt Baxendale created a try out of nothing. In the forwards, Heath blooded Ollie Cook at tight head and his development could be important when the inevitable heavier pitches arrive in mid-winter. The North Dean playing surface had three big puddles on Saturday morning but by the 3.0 kick off - Heath were putting their floodlights installed last year to use - they had disappeared and the home side were quick to show their attacking intent. Hetherington rounded Collard with typical ease to open the scoring following a lineout on six minutes and although Heath were already under pressure in the scrums, they bagged a second try when Baxendale received the ball close to the touchline just inside his own half, put in a perfectly weighed chip and got to the ball just before the lunging Collard, leaving himself with an easy canter behind the posts. Fullback Charlie Lomas had missed the first shot at goal and Hallett took over the kicking duties, adding the first of his three conversions for a 12-0 lead. Right winger Luke Clogher and Hetherington were both denied by tremendous cover tackles as Heath threatened to cut loose and hooker Dave Montgomery's usual accuracy with his lineout throwing deserted him as Plant's men were unable to take advantage of good attacking positions. The visitors were unable to get close to the home 22 in possession but their forwards managed to apply enough pressure to win penalties for Collard's sweet right boot to get them into the contest. He was on target after 23, 39 and 43 minutes and had he also been successful with a 33rd-minute effort the sides would have been on level terms. Heath lifted their game. Hetherington put in a clever angled kick to the corner and when Malton and Norton knocked back untidy lineout ball, marauding open side Wilby cashed in. Collard missed a 58th minute penalty before Heath scored two tries in five minutes to move 29-9 ahead. Hetherington broke the first line of defence and then passed out of the tackle to give the supporting Moana an easy score on 63 minutes. Replacement Ian Downsborough then won a turnover 20 metres inside his own half and Heath swept downfield via their backs. Baxendale was halted by a good tackle from Collard but the ball was moved quickly right where Clogher was left with a simple finish against an outnumbered defence. Malton and Norton's only spell of pressure in the home 22 was ended by a Hallett break away and with six minutes left the Heath forwards swarmed over the try line for Downsborough to get the touch down. Hetherington had the last word when Malton and Norton lost the ball close to half way. The home number 10 hacked forward and accelerated past a visiting winger to dive on the ball over the try line. The top four remains the target for Plant, who felt his side should have been more clinical in exploiting their numerous half breaks throughout the match. "We're as good as anyone in this division on our day but we need to start picking up some points away," said Plant, whose side are next in action at improving Sheffield in a fortnight.
