Sprogitt's Spartans, the 12 till 12 select XV, travelled the short distance to Copley for their last game of the season. Boasting enough players to lend a couple to their opponents on the way.
From the kick off, play was fairly even, though the generally younger but less experienced home XV looked quicker around the park. Indeed, it was the Rishes who opened their account the first. On 16 minutes their efforts were rewarded when the ball was popped out from Cheesie's last ditch tackle, for a try near the posts. The conversion was missed, but Rishes were now 5 – 0 up.
Eight minutes later they had a chance to add three points to their tally, but the young standoff's shot drifted wide. Undeterred, Heath's James Rushworth broke out of his own 22 and, when caught, laid the ball off to the supporting John Denwood who spurned the chance of passing to Paddy Kerr on the wing and passed to Dean Drain backing up on the inside. Deano scored but failed to make the conversion, leaving scores at 5 a piece.
Rishes restarted with the ball being cleanly taken by Heath's backrower Mark Mattock, who then ran it back with interest. The ball was finally popped to the supporting James Rushworth, who finished off the move by scoring between the posts and then picking up the points from the conversion himself. 5 – 12 to Heath.
On the half hour, Dave Harrison broke the line and took play into the homeside's 22, whereupon he popped to Paddy Kerr who went between the posts for another well worked Heath try; this time converted by Cheesie. Score 5 – 19 at half time.
After the restart, Deano broke free again and ran across the Rishes defensive line, jinking and dummying as he went. Finally, Paddy popped up to take the pass and went over for an unconverted try and to take the score on to 5 – 24.
Mark Metcalfe (with an e) seized his opportunity for points; jinking and ducking past would be tacklers, for a score between the posts. He converted this himself to move the score on to 5 – 31.
Mark was then replaced with Matt Baxendale, who carried on the scoring theme with a good run to touch down near the posts, though the conversion was missed. 5 – 36.
Heath then settled back and were content to let the home team take the closing stages of the game. This they did by picking up two tries and one conversion before the whistle was finally blown.
Score, Rishes 17 Heath 36.
