Report
The Hawks made the short trip to Lockwood knowing a win would confirm the league title.
Our local rivals were never going to roll over and make it easy and this was evident throughout. Heath started brightly, dominating territory and possession but unable to control the ball at vital times. Elliot Knight, Phil Cadogan and George Heron went close but scrambling defence kept the game scoreless.
However, it was the Hawks who scored first, after a couple of strong drives, the impressive Will Baxter crashed over, Ben Hall converted (0-7). Sam Sharp was carrying well and causing all sorts of problems for the Wolfpack's defence; however, he had to leave the field with a foot injury. Heath continued to dominate and Josh Beck was too powerful from close range, Hall converted (0-14). Huddersfield hit back strongly and enjoyed their best period of the game so far, pulled back twice for forward passes before scoring a converted try right on half time (7-14). HT 7-14.
The Hawks had shown they were the better team but the home side had shown glimpses of what they are capable of at the end of the first half. Huddersfield came out well and put Heath under pressure, star player Kieran Baldry and Max Rowntree relieving pressure with long kicks and mazy runs. Heron went close in the corner before he had to leave the field, joining Carrick Keighley-Payne and Danny Hood on the injured list. Subs, Nick Payne, Jai Thorne, Dylan North, and Will Isaac-Barker all added youth, energy and enthusiasm in both attack and defence.
Heath extended their lead when Cadogan found space out wide after good work by Harry Granger and Hall (7-19).
With ten minutes remaining Huddersfield were rewarded with a converted try to set up a nervy end to the game (14-19). At this stage, the home side looked the most likely but dogged defence led by skipper Brook Ward and good kicks by Hall and Rowntree kept Huddersfield deep in their own half. FT 14-19.
This win confirms the Hawks as league champions going into the playoffs next week. Well done to the whole squad who have been excellent throughout the year and fully deserve the title.
