After a disruptive warm up due to the adverse weather, the Hawks entered the field looking to continue their unbeaten start to the year.
Heath tightened up their game to accommodate the conditions, Sam Sharp led his team superbly from number eight and star player Harry Freeth took to his new role superbly, adding vital energy in attack and defence throughout the game. The home side dominated early possession and territory with Olly Cook scoring from close range before Carter Haigh bumped two off before rampaging over, Cook converted the second try. Harry Granger succumbed to a niggling injury with Matty Thornton coming into the backline. Joe Gallagher orchestrating things in the middle kicking sensibly and releasing Sam Fletcher, Phil Cadogan and Thornton. Eddie Sunter benefitting from another great move in the backs, before he scored a great try from 30 metres out. Nicholas Payne was growing into the game, after he was dumped in a good tackle he bounced back by powering through and stretching out for a deserved try, Cook converted. HT 24-0.
The Hawks still had gears to go up to and were wary of a wounded Morley side. The away side had their best spell of the game in the third quarter as Heath struggled to control the ball and their discipline. Massive defensive efforts by Thornton, Josh Beck, and Freeth repelled some dangerous attacks but an innocuous kick took a deflection into the hands of tattoos and tights who scored wide out. This was the first points conceded by the Hawks after 260 minutes of league rugby.
The Hawks came straight back, Zak Thomson ran well out wide with Cadogan and Alistair Ring finding space on the edges. Fletcher was a constant handful and his lung busting break set the position for Beck to collect from Max Rowntree before busting his way over, Cook converted. Freeth continued to carry hard right up to the final whistle and Morley’s tired defence couldn’t stop Cook registering his second try and fourth conversion. FT 38-5.
This was another impressive display in testing conditions and versatility in the squad. The focus now turns to the first of the ‘Friday Night Lights’ series over at Keighley, let’s get across and get behind the team.
