Report

The Hawks went into the game looking to bounce back after a disappointing performance last time out. They didn’t disappoint at they went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the division.

Heath started brightly, with the outstanding Jonny Cole leading the charge with some bruising defence and fantastic turnovers. He was ably supported up front by star player, Oliver Cook and Carter Haigh as they punched holes in the Driffield defence. Haigh made a great break, only thwarted by a last ditch tackle, Heath went hard at the line with Sam Sharp opening the scoring, Zak Thomson converted. However, from a mistake Driffield levelled the scores.

The home side were on top, as the returning Ben Hinsley and Nicolas Payne ran hard in midfield, with Max Rowntree and Harry Granger sniping through lazy defenders. From a great catch and drive, Cook controlled at the back to score his first, Thomson converted. A repeat of the first restart saw Heath concede a converted try immediately as both teams looked to play attractive rugby. Undeterred, George Heron, Jonny Garrity, and Cole ran hard to set up great position before Cook picked up from close range to score. Leon Ashton replaced James Whitworth, only to see yellow after a fracas near the visitors line. Driffield finished the half well, tying the score right on half time. HT 19-19.

The Hawks knew it was their own mistakes that invited Driffield back into the game. Emlyn James and Matthew Wilkinson entered the fray and both were heavily involved in the start of the second half.

Driffield added a penalty and two quick fire tries to open up a 13 point lead with 30 minutes to play. The Hawks came back strongly with Cook scoring his hatrick from a great catch and drive, before converting his own score from the touchline. Rowntree followed this up with a long break only to see the resulting scrum lost against the head in a great scoring position.

Driffield finished the game on top as the Hawks ran out of energy. They added a further penalty and a converted try on the final whistle. FT 26-42

This was a great game to watch as the whole squad battled and outplayed at times a very good side. Captain, Brook Ward asked for a response and he was not disappointed. Well played lads.
