Report.
Heath travelled to Ilkley looking to complete the league double.
On a sun-drenched training pitch, the Hawks started the game superbly, attacking with real purpose and punch from the off. After a number of well worked phases, Heath opened the scoring with the unstoppable Jack Pilcher crashing over from a Max Rowntree pass, Oli Scrimshaw converted. Ilkley hit back after playing multiple phases before scoring a converted try to tie the scores. Undeterred, Heath attacked from deep with centres Elliot Knight and Sam Fletcher pushing through. Knight got on the outside of his opposite number before releasing a rampaging Sam Sharp who timed his pass superbly to player of the match, Harry Granger who scampered home from halfway, Scrimshaw converted.
Ilkley responded with a try of their own before Pilcher edged the visitors back in front with another close-range effort. However, the home team scored two converted tries at the end of the first half to finish on top. Half time 28-21.
The Hawks started the half well but were unable to capitalise on a number of half chances with the ball evading top scorer, Jake Firth on a couple of occasions, when it looked like he’d add to his impressive tally. Pilcher looked to have notched his hatrick try only for the referee to be unsighted and ruling the score out. Ilkley scored two quick fire tries to extend their lead. However, Heath's pack came charging back at the home side, Tom Stansfield, Chris Metcalf and Alex Patrick carrying hard, with the latter scoring a deserved try, unstoppable from close range. Ilkley scored the final converted try to finish the scoring. Full time 49-28.
The Hawks can be proud of how they applied themselves throughout and if they had taken some of their chances could have easily won the game. Ilkley’s lack of front row hence uncontested scrums from the start did influence an area which Heath would have been confident of dominating.
One game remains at home against Sheffield next Saturday.
