Report:

After a late arrival and playing into a strong wind, the Hawks knew they needed to keep ball in hand and start well.

The visitors' opening 20 minutes were superb, controlling possession and looking to play from deep. Player of the match, Chris Johnson, cut through the disjointed defence before handing onto Joe Morrison who galloped over from 40 metres out, Oli Scrimshaw added the conversion. From the restart Heath attacked superbly, Johnson and Scrimshaw moving the ball well, releasing the elusive Jake Firth and Elliott Spiers with only scrambling defence denying them. When Phil Cadogan went close, Johnson hit a hard line off Max Rowntree to score a deserved try. Up front, Carter ‘The Enforcer’ Haigh, Sam Sharp and Ben Stringer carried hard and kept the Hawks on the front foot. After more prolonged pressure on the home sides try line, the excellent Elliot Knight powered his way over, Scrimshaw converted.

In the last 15 minutes of the half Scunthorpe had their best spell. Capitalising on Heath’s mistakes, Cadogan’s yellow card and using the wind well to pin the visitors in their own half. Scunthorpe scored 3 tries all from close range, using their bulk to good effect. Half time 17-19.

After dominating the early stages, Heath had invited Scunthorpe back into the contest and were now in a real battle. Johnson used all his experience to kick Heath into good areas, adding two penalties and a drop goal to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Brook Ward led the pack superbly, with Max Dawes a rock in defence against an onslaught, as the home side went for the win. Scunthorpe had scored one try and finished the game camped deep in the Hawks half. When Ward stole the attacking line out 5 metres out, the referee blew for time. Full time 22-28.

This was another great performance which demonstrated the spirit and determination of the squad. The Hawks remain unbeaten in 2024, extending their winning run to 6 games. This will be tested next week against high flying Driffield at home.
