On Saturday, 17th November, 2018, Heath 2nd xv entertained Otley 2nd xv at West Vale on a fine afternoon with the pitch in excellent condition.
The home side got off to the worst possible start going behind to a converted try within 90 seconds. 0-7. Otley continued to dictate play but it was Heath who opened their account with an excellent try. Centre Chris Beever made a superb break from his own half deep into Otley territory before passing back inside for the supporting winger, Luke Saltonstall, to take the ball and run under the posts for a try converted by Richard Cole. 7-7.
Otley came straight back at Heath and scored a 3 quick tries to lead by 7 – 22. Referee Andy Aldridge then had to leave the field with an ankle injury and an Otley supporter volunteered his services to allow the game to continue.
Things went from bad to worse for Heath as Otley scored a further 5 converted tries to increase their half – time lead to 7 – 57. This was no reflection on the official at all. Otley were playing some excellent rugby and had strong runners in both backs and forwards. They were totally dominant in the first period.
Heath outside half Richard Cole refereed the second half which started well for the home team. They put pressure on the Otley defence and prop Richard Dance used his strength to score a try near to the posts which was converted by Michael Reynolds. 14 – 57. However, Otley hit back immediately with a try. 14 – 62.
After 53 minutes Heath put more points on the scoreboard when they found a good position in the Otley ‘22’. The ball was spun down the line and Luke Saltonstall ran an excellent line and scored a try to the side of the posts. The try was converted again by Michael Reynolds. 19 – 62.
Unfortunately that was as good as it got as Otley, once again, took control and scored a further 3 tries. The final score was:
Heath 19 v 81 Otley
This was a game which was always going to be a test for the Heath lads. The Otley side contained a number of players who have a lot of experience playing in the Otley 1st xv and they were a very well-drilled, fit, strong side who, on this showing, are probably the best team Heath will play all season.
However, the Heath lads never let their heads drop and defended with enthusiasm throughout but were beaten by the much better side on the day.
Man of the match award for Heath went to young Danny Greenwood who had a good game both in defence and attack.
