Heath ended visitors Beverleys six match unbeaten run with a workmanlike performance in this Yorkshire 1 encounter. Heath included Martyn Barnes in the pack and had Jack Bruce on the bench in an otherwise unchanged side and on a cold and wet afternoon conditions were going to dictate the play.
It was the worst possible start for the home side when the Beverley stand off Rob Smith gathered the ball on the half –way line and skipped through several attempted tackles to go over for a try, after only 2 minutes for the visitors to lead 5-0. Heath managed to re-group and Richard Brown was leading by example with some strong running and a super kick from Ezra Hinchliffe set up Heaths first attack on 6 minutes. James Robson and Tom Baxter linked well and Matt Beasty went clear but the visitors held firm and cleared their lines. A penalty from Beverley's Smith increased their lead to 8 - 0 on 18 minutes and Heath needed to get some points on the board before the visitors got too far ahead.
On 20 minutes Ben Maxwell got the ball from a line out 10 metres from the Beverley try line and as the Heath pack drove forwards up popped Tom Baxter for a try, converted by Ezra Hinchliffe and Heath were back in the game 8 - 7. Heath had now moved up a gear and were running the Beverley line ragged. When ball was won again from a line-out Dom Walsh threw a pass out to Ezra Hinchliffe and as Jordan Bradbrook came into the line his pass to Luke Saltonstall saw the wing go in for Heaths second try in the corner, converted by Hinchliffe and the home side led 14-8 on 28 minutes.
Play was even for the next few minutes so coach Dave Harrison injected some new blood into the team with the introduction of Jordan Moana and Olly Cook who replaced Chris Piper and Martyn Barnes. Heath ended the half with a late flurry and Dom Walsh was unlucky with a charge down and run for the try line but just missed the touchdown as the referee blew for half time.
The second half began as the first when visiting stand off Smith snatched the ball from Brown and ran in a try in the first minute to reduce the arrears to 14-13. In the chase Callum Harriet-Brown aggravated a hamstring injury so on came Jack Bruce in a straight swop. Heath once again got the upper hand and continued to batter the Beverley defence. Several penalties were awarded to Heath and perhaps they should have considered kicking for points to increase their fragile lead but they continued to batter the visitors defence and on 66 minutes the pressure told and Hinchliffe converted yet another penalty for Heath to lead 17-13. Beverley had little answer to the Heath onslaught and gave away a series of penalties in the last 10 minutes of the game, two of which were converted by Hinchliffe, for a final score of 23-13.
This was a fine workmanlike performance from the whole squad of players and Heath fully deserved their win which moves them up a place in the league.
