Heath's depleted Team couldn't hold out against Wath.

Reporter: Thomas Stanley Walton
Dated: 30 November -0001
A much-changed Heath side headed to South Yorkshire looking for a morale-boosting final game of the season. Anthony Darling, Martin White, Fergus Marsden, Koffi Brobbey and Matt Baxendale were all in for injured or unavailable regular first-teamers. The worst possible start for Heath came after 3 minutes when they conceded a try by McCarthy from a rolling maul and Wath opened up a 7 – 0 lead with Quinn’s conversion. Slick handling by the home side put Heath under pressure with Brobbey, Mark Puttick and Alex Cust making good tackles. After 12 minutes, Heath were penalized for a deliberate knock-on but Quinn’s attempt hit the post. A great run from the Wath right wing was halted when McFadden held him up short, but the relief was short-lived as Wath’s Joe Bartlett, playing at No. 10, was given an easy run to score under the posts on 15 mins. The converted try made it 14 – 0 on 18 mins. The first Heath move came soon after when Cust and Ryan Hunter linked well. Brobbey came up to collect the ball and pass out to White and Darren Neilly before debutant Anthony Darling went over. Ezra Hinchliffe converted and Heath were in the game, only 14 – 7 down. From the re-start Joe Shipman, Rob Thackray and Baxendale stormed through to set up another Heath attack. Heath were playing well now and astute kicking from Hinchliffe set up lineout ball. Baxendale made another scything run but got injured in the process, to be replaced by Marsden. White went to fullback and Cust moved out to centre. A cross-kick from Hinchliffe to Puttick, lurking unmarked out wide on the wing, would have caught Wath unawares but the ball bounced out of Puttick’s reach and Wath cleared. Good hands from Cust and Thackray set up Heath’s next attack as they developed a fast open game after a somewhat indifferent start. Alas, an innocuous kick from Wath was misjudged by White and when the ball was dribbled through further, Brobbey also failed to gather it, allowing Wath centre Robert Booth to register another converted try, on 37 mins: 21 - 7. This was entirely against the run of play after Heath had been in command for the previous 15 mins. Wath scored their bonus-point fourth try soon after to take the game further away from the visitors at 28 – 7. When a gentle melee developed the referee decided it was time for the interval. Bartlett left the arena with a badly cut finger. Stern words at half time had the desired effect on Heath and Hinchliffe released Thackray for a well-taken try on 42 mins: 28 – 12. On 50 mins, Hinchliffe kicked a straight penalty to reduce the deficit further: 28 – 15. Heath pressed for another try and were encamped in the Wath 22 on 65 mins but the hosts withstood the barrage. With 13 mins to go, Heath were staring defeat in the face. Wath increased their lead with a penalty on 72 mins: 31 – 15. When Hamish Pratt was sin-binned on 74 mins Heath’s chance had gone and Wath turned the screw for their fifth try: 36 – 15. From a disastrous restart, Wath gathered and a length-of-the-field run produced their sixth try under the posts with 3 mins left: 43 – 15. Heath had shown some promising signs but could not contain the fast breaks. This was a disappointing end to a season of near-misses.
