Report
Heath Hawks opened their league campaign with an impressive win in Leeds.
With a number of players making their competitive debut and new coach Nick O’Connor at the helm, the team set the tone from the start. Fantastic carries by Josh Beck, Carrick Keighley-Payne and Will Baxter set up great position before Joe Gallagher switched play for Ted Grogan to score his first try, Gallagher converted. Beck was next to crash over as Moortown struggled to clear their line, Gallagher added the two. Lively winger, Harry Freeth was next to benefit from good hands in the centre, finishing well in the corner.
The home side had their best spell but some great defence and intelligent kicking relieved pressure. Grogan scored the next two, The first from close range after a great Zak Thomson break. From the restart, Grogan made the initial break before feeding Keighley-Payne who kept his head to offload to Grogan who streaked away for a great converted try and his hatrick. HT 0-33.
The team regrouped and set themselves the challenge of nilling the opposition. After a shaky first 30 seconds of the half, the Hawks dominated. Beck scored the next two tries and completed his hatrick, firstly backing up a great Gallagher break and then crashing over after another charged down kick. Keighley-Payne scored a deserved try, Gallagher added all three conversions. Next up was a rampaging Carter Haigh who broke on the halfway before powering home untouched. Grogan notched his fourth try after some great build up play by Max Rowntree. With the clock run down, Will Baxter popped up on the wing to dive over, superbly converted by Oliver Cook. FT 0-71.
This was a great first outing for the squad, with some impressive displays all over the field. With lads returning next week and confidence high, we move on to face Wetherby at home next Saturday.
