Report:

Heath travelled to Leeds with a strong squad on a damp afternoon. The home side had struggled to get a team together and cobbled together 11 bodies. Thank you again to our subs Jack Mollet, Emlyn James, Adam Milner, & James Whitworth who played the full game for Roundhegians and were their standout performers.

It was a scrappy start by both teams with loose passes and dropped balls the common theme. Heath were growing into the game but needed to shorten up their game and keep possession. The first try came after a break by Owain Griffiths who found Tobias Hinchliffe in support, when closed down he kept his nerve and kicked inside for September’s player of the month, Matthew Wilkinson to gather and score, Olly Scrimshaw converted.

Heath were now on top and breaks from Sam Sharp and Brook Ward should have been capitalised on. Wilkinson used his pace to outstrip the defenders to score his second before Carter Haigh scored his first try in Heath colours, running a great line off Scrimshaw. Ben Gianotti was having a great game at 10 and when he spotted a gap, confidently dummied and beat two defenders for a great score. Scrimshaw and Gianotti had added two of the conversions for a 26-0 half time lead.

Due to an injury, Roundhegians were reduced to 14 players, so Richard Cole sat out the second half to even up the numbers. The returning Jack Crabtree moved to scrum half and was involved straight away, making a great break, Mark Puttick should have scored an easy try but the pass was deemed forward. After a good run from Sharp, Scrimshaw and Hinchliffe released a rampaging Owain Griffiths who finished well from half way, Crabtree converted.

Heath were fronting up in defence, with Gav Rhodes, George Heron, Ward and Paddy Kerr hitting hard. Wilkinson made a long break and unselfishly handed the ball to Joe Shipman to score. This act of charity was uncalled for as Shipman scored his second with no assist from short range! Crabtree scored the final try as he rounded the stranded fullback to score the third unconverted try of the half, final score 0-48.

This was a strong performance in trying conditions against a disjointed opposition. The squad needed to play and this will set us up for next week’s trip to Yarnbury.
