Third match into the season saw a 1st round Yorkshire Cup home fixture against Morley played out on the West Vale No 1 pitch in front of a good number of both home and away supporters.

Morley kicked off towards the road leaving Heath having to weather a sustained period on defence in their own half.Despite a number of penalties against Heath early on, a theme that played out throughout the match, the home side defended doggedly against the much larger Morley pack. Two early injuries to Dillon Hilton and Sam McIntyre forced early changes with Ben Kershaw filling in on the side of the scrum with both later returning to the field.

Heath rallied and worked their way into the Morley half through good work in the lineout despite having a hard time in the scrums and loose where the big Morley forwards were gaining the advantage. This advantage finally led to the home sides defence finally being breached in the 23rd minute for Morley to lead 7-0.

Heath came back from the kick off with Centre Alfie Connors linking with No 8 Isaac Shaw,A quick tap penalty from halfback Owen Simpson linking with Shaw saw Heath putting pressure on the visitors defence. Morley relieved pressure with a penalty kick to touch before half time was called with the visitors in front.

The second half began with Captain Sam McIntyre returning and Callum Pickett and Finlay Verry as direct replacements for Jack Mollett and Saul Marson respectively.Heath were quickly on attack in the opposition half and a couple of excellent penalty kicks to touch from First Five Ben Gianotti kept that pressure on the visitors. Strong defence and tackling with McIntyre and Rowntree leading the way saw Heath win a penalty 10m out on the left hand side.Rowntree quickly took the tap and ghosted over the line wide out to close the gap to 7-5.

Shortly after the kick off an offside Morley loosie’s high tackle on Gianotti saw a brief stoppage for a blood injury, much to the protestation of one of the Morley coaches. When play resumed loose ball was secured by the visitors who took the opportunity to extend the lead to 12-5, 14 minutes into the second half.

The visitors larger pack were then regularly making good progress into the Heath half and points came a steady rate. The Heath boys never gave up and kept tackling and trying to the final whistle but the larger Morley outfit was the difference with Heath showing no less level of commitment and skill levels than their opponents.
