Match Report
The Hawks travelled to Leeds looking to bounce back from last week’s home defeat. Injuries throughout the club saw numerous changes to the squad.
Heath started the game well, controlling possession and looking the more likely to open the scoring. Debutant, Jason Kay and Josh Beck were causing problems with powerful drives. Ben Hall and Jack Bruce combined to release Phil Cadogan before the ball was recycled for Tom Egan to attack the blind side with Kieran Baldry releasing Harry Granger to open the scoring, Hall converting superbly from out wide (0-7).
Heath went close again when Beck was held up over the line. Against the run of play the home sides powerful number 8 burst through a couple of would be tackles to score a converted try (7-7). This sparked Roundhegians who dominated the next ten minutes, capitalising on poor defence to add a further two tries (19-7). The Hawks finished the half well, Granger going in on the overlap to reduce the deficit (19-12). However, it was the home side who scored their fourth try of the afternoon, bursting through the middle and scoring under the posts (26-12 HT).
Heath had to front up in defence and put together more phases in attack. The Hawks made a positive start to the half, Cadogan went close after a Bruce break before player of the match, Elliot Knight crashed over, Hall converted (26-19). Beck made a superb fifty metre break but Heath couldn’t capitalise on the good field position. Oliver Cook made a welcome return, stiffening up the scrum and using his physicality in both attack and defence.
Roundhegians dominated the next fifteen minutes, capitalising on good field position to register three more tries, with George Heron receiving a yellow card for a high shot (47-19).
Heath continued to play good stuff as they went in search of the try bonus point. The backs combined to release Bruce who surged towards the line only stopped by a high shot which resulted in a penalty try (47-26). The home side completed the scoring with a well struck penalty at the death (50-26 FT).
The squad competed well for long periods but unfortunately were unable to hold the home sides powerful runners. What better way to bounce back than with a local home derby against the Halifax Vandals next Saturday.
