Match Report
No First XV game on Sat, but the Hawks travelled to Wath on Dearne to take on their 2nds in a Yorks 2 League game.
The pitch was in a Park and it bounced down throughout - which was a bit of a 'leveller'. Basically, the match was played in awful conditions with a battling home side frustrating the visitors for large parts of the game. Infact, Wath maintained possession for long periods in these difficult conditions
When Heath did move the ball they looked good, Malthouse was the scorer of the first try, a special one given it was his first game for 2 years! He slid in after galloping in from 20m, on 8 minutes. Skipper Fletcher controlled field position, consistently putting Wath back into their 22 and it was a mercurial individual finish from Fletcher who ducked and weaved to gleefully dive under the posts, for Heath's second try, converting it for a 12-0 lead. Next up, a perfectly executed line out was followed by exquisite handling from the back line to release Jack Bruce for the first of his 2 tries, Fletcher converting for a 19-0 half time lead.
To their credit, Wath kept battling away and after Heath's inability to field the kick off, plus a couple of back to back penalties, they were able to crash over from close range, converting for 7-19, a score that remained for the majority of the second half as both teams fought tirelessly in the weather.
Heath eventually found another gear late on, Bruce danced over for his second and with time up Sam Sharp culminated a fine performance soaring over after a close range penalty drive released him. With skipper Fletcher off the field, Ben Hall converted one of the 2 tries allowing Heath to thankfully leave South Yorkshire with a 31 - 7 win and with their unbeaten record intact. Plus another 5 League points.
As said, a credit to both Teams for battling hard against the conditions as well as each other.
The Hawks are now joint Top of Yorks 2B.
Many Thanks
To all the supporters who braved the elements to cheer the Hawks on.
