Match Report
The Hawks entertained Bramley for their first home fixture in Counties 2 Yorkshire B. A late change to the starting side saw Kieran Baldry come in at fullback with Jack Bruce shifting to the wing with Reuben Flynn running late.
Heath started well, dominating possession and territory. The home pack's early dominance saw Jordan Shaw emerge with the ball after a great catch and drive, Sam Fletcher converting superbly from wide out (7-0). Bramley hit back with a penalty goal to reduce the deficit (7-3). Shaw, Haigh and Carrick Keighley-Payne carried hard before Baldry found space to race clear from his own half. After a number of penalties against the visitors, George Heron went close, before Heath opted for a scrum which they controlled with number eight Will Baxter benefitting from the pushover, Fletcher converted (14-3).
Player of the match, Sam Sharp, Sam Brown, Max Rowntree & Brook Ward defended strongly all game, with some massive hits in midfield. Bruce scored the next try, Fletcher and Ben Hall combining to give him space on the outside before he left the last defender stranded on the floor & streaking clear for a great score, Fletcher converted (21-3 HT).
The Hawks needed to reduce the number of penalties they were conceding and use their superior class in the backline.
Bramley came out with a forward orientated approach, making easy metres around the ruck, eventually creating enough space for their winger to squeeze over (21-8). The visitors continued to dominate with the ball, only heroic defence stopping any further scores. As it looked more likely Bramley would score next, the electric Flynn intercepted and raced clear from half way, Fletcher converted (28-8). The away side continued to cause havoc with their direct running and offloads, with their elusive centre benefitting with two tries (28-20).
Heath managed to get some possession and worked their way up field. Fletcher’s cross-field kick agonisingly evading the on-rushing Flynn. Bramley’s prop received a yellow card for entering the ruck at the side. Heath kept banging on the door, the elusive Rowntree went on a mazy run, finding enough space to score Heath’s fifth and final try (33-20).
With time nearly up, Heron still had time to get himself binned with seconds remaining (33-20 FT).
Another five points gained against a strong side to continue the Hawk’s unbeaten start to their league campaign. Heath travel to Wath next week looking to make it five wins.
