Match Report
The Hawks headed to Wakefield looking to follow up their impressive display last time out. Sandal started well coming up the hill, using their forwards to punch holes in Heath's defence. Following an early penalty (3-0), Sandal took advantage of good territory to score out wide (8-0). The Hawks eventually started to get some possession, Ben Hall and Phil Cadogan made long breaks, before two potential try scoring passes found the touchline rather than the wingmen.
Heath were now well on top, star player Sam Cox and Will Baxter went close before Josh Beck used his bulk to crash over from close range, Sam Fletcher converted (8-7). Jack Bruce was next on the scoresheet, collecting a long Hall pass before using Reuben Flynn as a decoy, dummying and surging over from twenty metres (8-12). Carrick Keighley-Payne carried hard from the kick off, before Elliot Knight continued the move. From a sublime Hall pass, Fletcher scythed through tired defence to score a converted try (8-19). The returning Carter Haigh crashed through defenders and reached out to notch his first try of the season, Fletcher converted (8-26). The home side finished well but resolute defence held out and there was no further score (HT 8-26).
The Hawks knew Sandal would come out strong with the slope to their advantage. Sandal scored the next try after good play out wide (13-26). The impressive Flynn scored his first, collecting Bruce’s pass before kicking along the floor, collecting and out pacing the cover (13-31). From the kick off, Luke Townsend collected the ball on the full before carrying untouched uphill to the 22 before receiving a penalty. The quick-thinking Cox, took a quick tap and ran clear to score a well-deserved try (13-36).
Poor discipline dogged Heaths second half performance, Shaw yellow carded and Sandal taking advantage with two well taken tries (27-36). The home side looked the most likely and when Zak Baker was binned, Heath needed to regroup and get a hold of the game.
Cox kicked intelligently to relieve pressure and move the tiring Sandal defence about. With five minutes remaining, Cox kicked high into midfield, the home number 8 fumbled into the grateful arms of Flynn who scored under the posts for a converted try (27-43). Not to be denied, Flynn completed his hatrick, finishing well on the edge after Cox had spotted him unmarked out wide (FT 27-48).
The Hawks will look to continue their unbeaten start to the season when they travel to Warley next Saturday to take on the Halifax Vandals.
