Match Report: Saturday 23 January 2010

Reported by Dan Ingham.
FINAL SCORE: Heath RUFC 8 vs Halifax Vandals 5

A Nail-biter.

Heath were without Captain Ingham and vice Paddy Kerr, but started the game with the returning Tom Smith at 10 and Emlyn James skippering the side.

The match was played under poor conditions with both sets of forwards digging deep. Heath had much the heavier pack and on 25 mins where duly rewarded when a fine push over try, from a scrum some 15 yds out, saw James flop on the ball to score. Smith missed the extras but it was 5 nil to Heath at half time.

The second half started pretty much the same, apart from moving to uncontested scrums, which, to some extent nullified the Heath advantage. The first 20 mins saw both sets of forwards battle for superiority and bang each other all over the park. The deadlock was finally broken with a fumble by Heath and this saw the Vandals throw the ball out wide to score a well taken try. The conversion was missed, 5 a piece.

On 73 mins came the highlight of the match when Tom Smith screamed for the ball just inside the visitors’ half and 10 yards in from touch. He unleashed a sweet drop kick that sailed over for a 8 to 5 lead. The lad himself looked quite shocked when it went over but it took the 3rds into full time with an 8 to 5 victory.
