Yorkshire Cup R2 - Dominant Dinnington

Heath u14s hosted Dinnington in round two of the Yorkshire Cup.  Both teams won in round one so winners of this fixture would remain in the top tier of the competition, the losers would drop down a tier.  A combination of injuries and half term holidays meant that Heath could field a squad of 16 players compared to Dinnington’s squad of 23 (maximum for cup fixtures).

Heath kicked off on the first team pitch and Dinnington immediately got on the front foot with a break from their own half down the left to get stopped short of the line with a great cover tackle by Ethan Murphy.  Quick hands led to a Dinnington try.

Heath 0 - 5 Dinnington

Heath have been slow starters in recent games and this week was no exception.  Dinnington were sharp in the forwards and backs.  Their no8 was having a field day against a defensive line which was disjointed and passive.

Dinnington scored four further tries in the first half.

HT: Heath 0 - 31 Dinnington

With the game already out of reach Heath needed to set new goals.  With the risk of a 50 point margin on the cards, meaning the game ending, this was now about the character of the Heathens.

The second half started with great promise.  On receipt of the kick-off Heath sent the ball left for Louie Moss to cut a great line through the Dinnington defence to then sprint 70m only to be caught 1m short of the try line.  Dinnington did well to turn the ball over and stop Heath from scoring their first try.

Heath started to secure more possession but Dinnington’s dominance in the forwards continued and in the 45th minute scored their fifth try.

Heath 0 - 36 Dinnington

This was followed quickly by another converted Dinnington try which meant that if another convert try would mean the game would stop:

Heath 0 - 43 Dinnington

With 10 min to go Heath had a lineout from halfway.  The ball came off the top and Ethan Murphy charged onto the ball in midfield.  Murphy stepped and sprinted 50m to dive under the posts.

Heath 7 - 43 Dinnington (conversion by Gordon)

With a minute left Heath had another lineout on the right 50m out.  With off the top ball the ball reach Ethan Murphy at centre and he back himself on the outside to score an impressive individual try.

FT: Heath 14 - 43 Dinnington

Congratulations to Dinnington on a fantastic team performance.  They will progress in the cup tier of the competition.  Heath will still have everything to play for in the lower tier.  The lads showed great character in out scoring Dinnington in the second half.

Men of the match - Louie Moss and Ethan Murphy
