Great morning training with a game at the end

Reporter: Al Gordon
Dated: 27 October 2024

Heath hosted Huddersfield u14s coached by former Heathen, and friend of the club, Daz Neilly.  As it was half term and a few of the squad unavailable both clubs agree to have a combined training session first followed by a match.  After a good warm up the forwards spent time focussing on the set piece and the backs on both attack and defence.

After some refreshments the game was on and playing on the second team pitch.  Huddersfield’s Ziggy was kind enough to volunteer to play for Heath in the first half to make numbers even and Zander in the second half - both a credit to their club.  Heath were playing towards Elland, and it was Huddersfield who started stronger.  With good interplay it was Huddersfield who crossed the line first.

Heath 0 - 5 Huddersfield.

Within minutes Heath were starting to get parity in the game.  Strong rucking and a good platform at scrum time lead to an opportunity for Ethan Murphy to score.

Heath 7 - 5 Huddersfield (conversion by Gordon)

The game was very balanced.  Both teams competing and defending well.  In the last two minutes of the first half Jasper Haigh crashed over to score.

HT: Heath 14 - 5 Huddersfield (conversion by Gordon)

In the opening play of the second half Heath made good progress into the Huddersfield half with some strong runs by Charlie Anderson, Wilf Bridge and Oscar Szadbey.  Alex Kershaw came flying onto the ball to score.

Heath 19 - 5 Huddersfield (conversion missed by Murphy)

The game was then an arm wrestle for the next 15 minutes with both teams not giving an inch.  With three minutes to go, Huddersfield hammered the Heath line to score and keep the game alive.

Heath 19 - 12 Huddersfield

In the last minute of play Heath were awarded a penalty 40m in front of the posts.  Sonny Gordon struck the sweetest of kicks that carried over the bar.

FT Heath 22 - 12 Huddersfield

A superb morning of rugby all round and a great way to prepare for round two of the Yorkshire Cup where Heath host Dinnington on Sunday 3rd November.

Man of the match - Wilf Bridge
Most Improved - Alex Kershaw
