Report.
Heath Hawks kicked off their season with a battling performance against a good Scunthorpe team. After an even start to the game, Zak Thomson had the opportunity to open the scoring but pulled his penalty attempt wide.
Star player, Jonny Garrity ran hard and got over the gain line every time he carried. Fresh from his wedding last week, Matthew Wilkinson was unlucky not to streak away after fumbling a loose, bouncing ball.
The visitors took advantage of Heath inviting them into their half, scoring the first try of the game from close range. The Hawks hit straight back with captain, Brook Ward, powering his way over, Thomson converted to tie the scores. Lively scrum half, Harry Granger intercepted and made half way but couldn’t find support quick enough to finish the break. Young debutants, Nick Payne, Jaymes Payne & Alastair Ring added enthusiasm and quality to the team, all contributing superbly throughout.
However, it was Scunthorpe who scored next. Evergreen Heath stalwart, Joe Shipman returned to the side in the second row and played like he’d never been away. Olly Burbidge, Sam Sharp and George Heron carried hard as the home team looked to get back in the game. Right on half time the visitors strong centre galloped free to register their third try.
Half Time 7-21.
The Hawks needed to play in the right areas and not give the visitors easy outs with penalties and mistakes. Scunthorpe added their fourth converted try before Wilkinson latched onto Heron to carry a number of defenders over the line. With a lot of tired and battered bodies on show, Scunthorpe finished the game with two more tries to run out deserved winners.
Full Time 12-42.
The score did not reflect the game, with Heath right in the contest up until the latter stages. Everyone that pulled on the shirt was a credit to the club and we are excited for the rest of the year as the squad settles down.
